Crank It Up
Some church music puts us to sleep
Our attention it can't keep,
Other songs have different names
But they all sound the same.
Move the spirit over the congregation
There is no need for deep meditation,
Waft the spirit along on songs sang loud
To ignite the complacent nodding crowd.
Windup the piano player, wake the choir
Play some rousing hymns for an hour,
Exalt the chorus to belt them out
As we rise with a hallelujah shout.
Let praising song fill this sanctuary
Let jubilant Christian voices carry
A harmonious old hymn in triple time
Arousing the spirit to heights sublime.
Up to rafters let the gospel music ring
As we lilt our voices to joyfully sing
And when that great old song is done
We'll gleefully pep up another one.
Now don't fault us for being wrong
We love those slow gospel songs
But give us one with a fast hard beat
Then backup and watch our happy feet.
