Under a sky laced with stars
A thunder is heard afar,
The boom of the diesel power
Roars at the midnight hour.

The midnight run has begun
By a nameless mothers son,
Through the dark it thunders
With tires wailing under.

An eighteen wheeled rig
Blue-black and big,
Streaks through the night
Behind glaring headlights.

Over rolling distant hills
A screaming echo shrills,
Hot tires on asphalt whines
As over the road it winds.

Through tall mountain pass
And across the plains grass
The phantom truck races
Toward unknown places.

Like a ghost from the past
As booming air horns blast
It streaks the one-way track
With fire streaming from stacks.

No one knows where it goes
As through the night it blows,
No one knows where it's from
Or to whom it belongs.

A driver from hell some tell
And they know the tale well
Of a big rig that runs at night
And disappears at daylight.
